Orkney: a choice of islands

It would be easy to think, as an outsider, that Orkney is a single place. It isn’t. It’s a whole series of inhabited and uninhabited islands. From the mainland of Orkney, known as The Mainland, you can take a range of different ferries, of varied sizes and frequencies, to other islands, all of which have a different character and charm.

The islands each have an interchangeable scaffolding-pole sign on the harbour, which is placed at the front of the car lanes when a ferry to that island is due.
